Chiller truck and freezer truck for bulk refrigerated transport in the UAE

Chiller Truck vs Freezer Truck: Which One for Bulk Cargo?

Once your cold cargo outgrows a van, a truck is the obvious next step. The harder question is which truck. Book a chiller truck for frozen stock and you’ll unload a thawed, unsellable pallet. Book a freezer truck for fresh produce and you can freeze lettuce into mush. The good news: just like with vans, the chiller truck vs freezer truck decision comes down to one thing. Temperature.

The quick answer:

  • Chiller truck → holds 0°C to +8°C → for bulk fresh and chilled goods (produce, dairy, beverages, fresh meat, pharmaceuticals)
  • Freezer truck → holds −18°C to −25°C → for bulk frozen goods (frozen meat, seafood, ice cream, frozen ready meals)
  • Chilled and frozen in one load? → a dual-zone truck carries both in separate compartments

First: What Is a Refrigerated Truck?

“Refrigerated truck” (sometimes called a reefer truck) is the umbrella term for any temperature-controlled truck. It isn’t a separate vehicle with its own temperature. Our refrigerated truck rental fleet comes in three versions: the chiller truck, the freezer truck and the dual-zone truck. Choosing between them is really a question about what your cargo needs.

What Is a Chiller Truck?

A chiller truck keeps bulk cargo cold but not frozen, at a steady 0°C to +8°C. That’s the range fresh food needs: cold enough to slow spoilage, but never so cold that it freezes and loses texture, flavour or value. Our chiller truck rental carries full pallet loads at that range from the first drop to the last.

Best suited for:

  • Supermarket and hypermarket replenishment
  • FMCG and wholesale distribution
  • Fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, eggs and juices in volume
  • Fresh meat and poultry that must not freeze
  • Bulk pharmaceuticals at +2°C to +8°C
  • Large-scale catering and hotel supply

What Is a Freezer Truck?

A freezer truck keeps bulk cargo frozen solid, at −18°C to −25°C. At −18°C and below, bacterial growth effectively stops, which is why food safety rules treat it as the frozen threshold. Our freezer truck rental is built to hold that range across full pallet loads, even in peak UAE summer.

Best suited for:

  • Frozen food distributors moving pallets between cold stores and branches
  • Frozen meat, poultry and seafood in bulk
  • Ice cream and frozen desserts, which need the coldest setting of −20°C to −25°C
  • Frozen ready meals, fries and vegetables
  • Large frozen supply drops for events and labour camps

Notice the last row: capacity is the same. The only real difference is temperature, and that’s the one thing you can’t afford to get wrong.

Why You Can’t Just “Turn the Dial”

It’s tempting to think any refrigerated truck can be set to any temperature. In practice, a chiller truck’s refrigeration is built for the 0°C to +8°C range. It isn’t designed to pull a full load down to −18°C, and in 45°C UAE heat it simply won’t hold it. Frozen cargo loaded into a chiller truck will begin to thaw on the way.

A freezer truck can sometimes be set warmer, but if your cargo is mainly chilled, a dedicated chiller truck holds a steadier chilled range and is the more efficient choice. Either way, the rule of thumb is simple: if the product is frozen when you load it, it needs a freezer truck. If it’s fresh or chilled when you load it, a chiller truck will keep it perfectly.

Not sure where your product sits? Our refrigerated van temperature guide lists the right setting for each cargo type, and the same ranges apply to trucks.

What If Your Load Is Chilled and Frozen?

Many distributors and caterers move both at once: fresh vegetables and dairy alongside frozen meat, all going to the same kitchens. For these runs, a dual-zone truck is the answer. It has two separately insulated compartments, one held at 0°C to +8°C and the other at −18°C to −25°C, so both loads travel together without either one compromising the other. It’s available alongside our chiller and freezer trucks, across all seven emirates.

If each side of the load is large enough to fill a truck on its own, or the chilled and frozen goods are going to different destinations, two separate trucks are usually more practical.

Truck or Van? Check the Size First

Everything above assumes you need truck capacity. If you’re moving a few crates or making frequent city drops, a van is cheaper and easier to park. The same temperature logic applies at van scale, as we explain in chiller van vs freezer van. For the size question itself, our guide on refrigerated van vs refrigerated truck walks through capacity, distance and cost.

Common Scenarios

  • Supermarket chain restocking dairy and produce across branches → chiller truck
  • Frozen food distributor moving pallets from a Jebel Ali cold store to Abu Dhabi → freezer truck
  • Ice cream brand supplying retailers through the summer → freezer truck at −20°C to −25°C
  • Pharma distributor moving bulk medicines at +2°C to +8°C → chiller truck
  • Caterer supplying a labour camp with fresh vegetables and frozen meat → dual-zone truck
  • Restaurant receiving small daily fresh deliveries → chiller van, not a truck

Long inter-emirate runs make the right choice even more important, since every extra hour on the road is another hour for a wrong setting to do damage. Our guide to refrigerated transport in Abu Dhabi covers why trucks play a bigger role over longer distances.

Before You Book: 3 Quick Checks

  1. What state is the product in at loading? Frozen means a freezer truck. Fresh or chilled means a chiller truck. Both means dual-zone.
  2. Can you prove the cold chain held? Hotels, supermarkets and inspectors increasingly ask for temperature records. Our guide to HACCP & cold chain compliance in the UAE explains what a compliant vehicle should offer.
  3. What’s the budget and rental length? Daily, weekly and monthly rates differ, and so does the price per delivery. Our guide to chiller van rental cost in the UAE explains what moves the price, for vans and trucks alike.

The booking steps themselves are the same for trucks as for vans. Our guide on how to rent a refrigerated van in the UAE walks through them one by one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the difference between a chiller truck and a freezer truck?

Temperature. A chiller truck holds 0°C to +8°C for bulk fresh and chilled goods like produce, dairy and beverages. A freezer truck holds −18°C to −25°C for bulk frozen goods like frozen meat, seafood and ice cream. Both carry full pallet loads, so the choice comes down to what your cargo needs.

Q2. Can a chiller truck carry frozen goods?

No. A chiller truck is built for 0°C to +8°C and can’t hold frozen cargo at −18°C or colder, especially in UAE heat. Frozen goods would start to thaw, which damages quality and breaks food-safety rules. For frozen cargo in bulk, you need a freezer truck.

Q3. Can a freezer truck be used for chilled goods?

Some freezer trucks can be set warmer, but if you mainly carry chilled goods, a dedicated chiller truck holds a steadier chilled range and is more efficient. If you carry chilled and frozen goods on the same run, a dual-zone truck is the best option.

Q4. What is a dual-zone truck?

A dual-zone truck is a refrigerated truck with two separately insulated compartments, one held at chilled 0°C to +8°C and the other at frozen −18°C to −25°C. It lets you move chilled and frozen goods together in one trip without compromising either load.

Q5. Do you rent chiller trucks and freezer trucks across the UAE?

Yes. We rent chiller trucks, freezer trucks and dual-zone trucks across all seven emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with 24/7 same-day dispatch and daily, weekly or long-term rental options.
